There is much debate on the optimal diet for weight loss. The Western diet, which dates back several centuries, includes a high consumption of red meats, dairy products, refined sugar, salt, fats, and other foods rich in fat, salt, sugar, and cholesterol. While, the Eastern (Asian) dietary pattern is characterized by low consumption of saturated fat, salt, sugar, and cholesterol but also includes food such as noodles, rice, fish, poultry, vegetables, and fruits. The Western diet has been shown to be associated with various diseases including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. Processed foods consist of refined sugars, hydrogenated oils, dextrose, corn syrup, and other carbohydrate-based sweeteners that contain little or no nutritional value. Processed foods are high in calories and low in nutrients; this combination leads to overeating and weight gain.
The consumption of high calorie diets, or ’empty’ calories as they are known, leads to obesity. A diet high in empty calories leads to decreased caloric intake and a greater tendency towards overeating. The consumption of high calorie diets contributes to insulin resistance, the beginning of chronic disease. The consumption of the western diet leads to reduced activity levels and an increased risk for several cancers, such as breast and colon cancer. The consumption of the western diet also contributes to an increased risk for diabetes, stroke, hyperlipidemia, and many other chronic disease.
There are several diseases that the western diet leads to and the most serious of these diseases are coronary artery disease and heart disease. These diseases are caused by the consumption of highly processed foods that are devoid of essential nutrients, which lead to decreased blood pressure and increased stress on the heart. The decreased blood pressure and stress are manifested in the form of an increased risk for heart failure, cardiac arrest, heart attack, and heart disease. This increased risk is largely due to the lowered blood flow and increased blood pressure that are characteristic of the western diet. These highly processed foods also adversely affect the brain function of the individual.
Individuals who are diagnosed with diabetes, have low energy levels and poor concentration may benefit from a controlled, low-calorie, low-fat, low-sugar, low-salt diet that includes a reduced intake of the highly processed foods mentioned above. A controlled, low-calorie, low-sugar, low-sodium, low-fat, low-cholesterol, and low-toxin diet can be beneficial for individuals who want to control their blood glucose, and their body weight.
